NLP leader Mr. Gilbert Darrell finished behind the two UBP candidates, ending his connection with the constituency and signalling the demise of his party.

Cheers of "Renee, Renee, hip, hip, hooray'' broke out in the election room after businesswoman Ms Webb was announced as the poll topper.

"I told you there would be an upset here,'' said Ms Webb, smiling. "I was confident all the way along.

"We were expecting to win. It feels wonderful.'' she added, crediting the hard work put in by the PLP team.

Mr. Woolridge, who had been nervously pacing outside the polling station, said the win had been achieved on national issues.

"The constituents want very much a new beginning and new direction and a new leadership, and they will have that. It feels very good. But it's certainly the result of hard work of branch members and the strong leadership of the PLP, and our commitment to the constituents and our pledge to be accountable.

I'm overwhelmed and humbled,'' said Mr. Woolridge.

The shock result was underscored by the fact that last-minute UBP polls showed Mr. Woolridge at the back of the pack in the constituency.

Neither of the UBP candidates showed up for the final figures, although they said earlier that they would be present for the result announcement.

Mr. Francis Furbert's fourth attempt to represent the seat ended in failure, as did that of newcomer Mr. Wendell Hollis.

Mr. Darrell, who seemed dejected even before the polls closed, said: "I can't say I saw it coming because I worked at it. It's got to be a traumatic feeling to have been at the top of the pole and then find yourself at the bottom.'' Hamilton East was tipped as one of the Island's most marginal districts. Mr.

Darrell was the incumbent, following the retirement of his partner in the district Mr. Haskins Davis of the UBP.

The PLP duo led from the beginning of the count, which had several moments of tension during recounts to check the running total.
