of Hamilton with a certificate of appreciation.

Human Affairs Acting Director Kenneth Dill described the award as "acknowledging the efforts of the Corporation of Hamilton in making the City accessible, thereby creating a barrier-free environment for the physically handicapped''.

And BPHA treasurer Sean O'Connell recognised the Corporation's work throughout the city and he said he hoped that the work will continue.

Dr. O'Connell also recalled that late BPHA president Margaret Carter, one of the organisation's leading founders who passed away in 1991, helped to amend the Protection for Persons with Disabilities Act (1988) and spearheaded many activities to benefit the physically handicapped.

"She was an inspiration to all,'' he said. "Margaret was like the sunshine, she lit up everything.'' Following the presentation, BPHA representatives Keith Simmons, Willard Fox and Elizabeth Godwin -- all in wheelchairs -- took Hamilton Mayor William Frith for a walk around the city and pointed out specific areas in need of further improvement.

The threesome, with Dr. O'Connell, pointed out the main problem was getting off of sidewalks.

"Most of the sidewalks leading to the cross-walks are sloped, but there are still quite a few that aren't,'' said Dr. O'Connell.

They showed the Mayor examples on the corners of Church and Burnaby Streets and Reid Street and Queen Street.

Opposite Perot Post Office, Ms Godwin showed Mr. Frith a drain which she said she often gets "stuck'' in.

"I agree it's not a perfect world and there is more we can do and will do to assist those in our community who are handicapped,'' said Mr. Frith.
