And Hamilton Rotarians heard last week how they could help make others aware of the trash problem.

Keep Bermuda Beautiful president Mrs. Kendaree Burgess-Fairn, speaking to the Rotary Club at their weekly meeting at the Hamilton Princess, encouraged members to reach out to people who they saw littering and motivate them to think about what they were doing and what they were creating on the Island.

"I'll bet you, the Rotarians, know someone who litters,'' Mrs. Burgess-Fairn said.

"I'm sure you know someone who is capable of throwing an empty can out of a car, kicking a can into a bush at the side of the road, maybe throwing an empty cigarette pack onto a roadway? "Maybe it's someone you work with, maybe it's a neighbour, maybe it's even one of your kids.'' Mrs. Burgess-Fairn said there were several things residents could do to help the problem. "Spreading the word. You can do your bit making sure that people are aware of these problems which are staring us all in the face. Talk about them,'' she said.

"Explain to the unheeding that there is a fight going on for the future of this Island and they need to first of all know about it.'' She added that Rotarians could set a good example by being environmentally responsible.

"Maybe you can come up with an idea that will show us how to reach people when they are just about to litter.

"Something to make them think `I am creating trash, I am responsible for the state of our roadways. If I am not part of the solution, I am part of the problem.'' Mrs. Burgess-Fairn added: "KBB is only as good as the people involved and the effort they put in. If it is going to work really effectively, each of us must make a commitment.

"One person can make a difference and that person could be you.''
