Industrial Union's Gas Station was still on the run last night.

The thief, who fired three shots at pursuing station staff, committed the robbery around 10 p.m. on Sunday night.

"The matter is in the hands of the Police,'' BIU president Mr. Ottiwell Simmons said yesterday. "As far as I know they are carrying out a full investigation and I am hopeful that they will find the culprit in short order.'' Mr., Simmons said a disturbing fact about the robbery was that the BIU had security on duty that night as usual.

"We have reasonably tight security,'' he continued. "That clever person must have broken through our security net. Exactly just how that could have happened I don't know.

"I am a bit shocked that it could have happened because there is ample security there and our staff are generally alert.'' Mr. Simmons said the staff on duty Sunday night were shaken by their ordeal although they did not absorb the gravity of crime until one of them were shot at as the thief fled along Princess Street.

"They confronted and aggressively went after the person who had a gun. In so doing they almost grabbed him. They managed to knock some of the money out of his hands.

"They also knocked a bag off of his shoulder. Having done that the criminal turned and shot three bullets and that is the frightening part of this.'' "The staff felt like heroes (Sunday) night but today they are shaken up because they can see how close they came to having their lives snuffed out.'' A Police incident room has been set up under Acting Chief Inspector Legay Farley.

Police would like to speak to anywitnesses who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the vicinity of Dundonald, Princess, Angle, Court or Union Streets at about 10 p.m. on Sunday.
