House passes Sports Centre bill
the National Sports Centre to a board of trustees.
Opposition MPs harshly criticised Government's failure to produce copies of the development plans.
The Progressive Labour Party also said the proposal for developing the land around the National Stadium had been drawn up before the Base lands became available.
"We didn't have anywhere else to develop -- we now have the Base lands,'' said Shadow Youth and Sport Minister Mr. Nelson Bascome.
But in a midnight vote, the United Bermuda Party carried the National Sports Centre Trustees Amendment Act by a vote of 20-17.
Former Premier Sir John Swan insisted that the logical place was in the Prospect area and the best way to speed up the development was by appointing trustees with experience in finance, sport and management.
Sir John added Police headquarters, located between the new school site and the stadium area could be moved to create "one campus''.
