House salutes Benn-Ible
Florida, was recognised yesterday in the House of Assembly.
Government and Opposition MPs offered condolences to her family and remembered her work in the community -- particularly her annual block parties which she held over the course of 40 years for Hamilton children.
Shadow Works and Engineering Minister C.V. (Jim) Woolridge kicked off proceedings noting that Mrs. Benn-Ible was an "outstanding lady''.
"She must have been the happiest person in the world,'' he said. "No-one enjoyed laughing as much as she did.'' House Speaker Stanley Lowe associated himself with the remarks as did his colleagues Nelson Bascome, Terry Lister and Stanley Morton.
Mr. Morton said Mrs. Benn-Ible was well known by most people and had always done things in their interest including her work with underprivileged children and her block parties.
He suggested naming something in her honour, an idea which was backed by fellow MPs Dale Butler and Ottiwell Simmons who called Mrs. Benn-Ible the "life of the party''.
He recalled being in Ghana and coming across an advertisement in a restaurant for a Bermuda Dance she had organised and was set to be held shortly.
Also associating themselves with the remarks were Opposition MP John Barritt who recalled Mrs. Benn-Ible's directness and his colleague Kim Young.
