Housekeepers back on the job
Southampton Princess over late linen went back to work yesterday.
President of the Bermuda Industrial Union Derrick Burgess said that the 30-or-so workers had resolved their problems with management and all were happy to get back to their duties.
They had complained clean bedlinens, which were supposed to be ready by 9.30 a.m., were arriving hours late.
Around 30 staff walked out on Monday morning before crisis talks with management saw around ten return to work later that day. But the rest stayed out for the remainder of the day.
After crisis talks were held, the issues were dealt with and Mr. Burgess said he hoped lasting proposals had been put in place to ensure the same difficulties did not crop up again.
He said: "Everything is back to normal and the staff went back to work today.
"They talked their problems out with the management and everyone seems quite happy.
"In our discussions with them, we wanted something put in place so that it doesn't happen again.'' Southampton Princess General Manager Norman Mastalir blamed the late linen problem on faulty equipment and staff shortages in the laundry room.
He said a faulty washing machine and a broken folding machine had both been fixed, but the staff shortage was an ongoing problem.
He said: "That's still a challenge, to recruit people to work in that area.
But as the slower season is coming that will be less of a problem.
"It is an ongoing issue to find people to work there. We met with the unions and the situation has been resolved.'' TOURISM TOU
