marijuana, The Royal Gazette can reveal.

Sources claimed yesterday the drugs would have a Bermudian street value of more than $500,000.

Calvin Burgess, 25, and 22-year-old Jamel Dwayne Amory are due to appear in court on October 11, charged with possession.

US Police said the pair were detained at Houston International Airport at 9.30 a.m. on September 18.

"They were arrested by a Houston Police officer from the narcotics division,'' said a Police spokesman.

"They had come into south Texas, and it is not impossible that they came from the Mexican border.'' It is claimed 10 "bricks'' of marijuana, wrapped in duct tape, were found in a duffel bag. The drugs weighed 34.75 pounds.

The spokesman said although Burgess' address was Atlanta, Georgia, a Bermudian driver's licence was found on him.

The pair were taken to Houston's Harris County Jail, and thought to have been put in separate cells.

They are scheduled to appear before Judge Mary Bacon at Harris County District Criminal Court, charged with possessing between five and 50 pounds of marijuana.

Sources said that the street value of drugs is generally lower in America than in Bermuda.
