Sen. Walwyn Hughes (Ind) said remarks made by Sen. Milton Scott about the voting motives of independent members on VSB radio were "below the line'' and an "affront'' to him.

Sen. Hughes said the comments were made after a recent vote by the Senate on the Trade Union Amendment Act.

"I was hurt to hear comments he made in the interview,'' he said. "I speak for myself and do the best I can. I vote the way I think my conscience tells me, that best meets the needs of the Country.

"I can understand Senators being upset and aggrieved at the way people vote or decisions go,'' he said.

He said if the incident had occurred in the House of Assembly, a retraction could have followed.

Sen. Hughes raised the matter at the first Senate meeting since the incident, on March 23.

Two new Senators are to sit on Government select committees after Sen. Alf Oughton became Senate President.

Sen. Hughes takes over on the Members Interests Joint Select committee and new Independent Sen. Jeanette Cannonier replaces Sen. Oughton on the Private Bills committee.
