Illegal dane ripped off women friends
before he is deported back to Denmark.
Hegelund, 30, of no fixed abode, was in Magistrates' Court on charges of theft and dishonestly using telephones to phone his family in Copenhagen.
Prosecuting, Police Insp. Peter Duffy said that between November 5 and 22 this year, the Dane had stolen bottles of tequila, vodka and rum, $1,700 in cash and made four trans-Atlantic telephone calls.
All the calls were made from homes of women who Hegelund knew, in their homes in Pembroke, Smith's and Hamilton parishes. The total cost of all the calls was $125.
Insp. Duffy said: "He told Police that all the incidents were influenced by alcohol. He was distraught over the break up of a love affair.
"The phone calls were made to his parents to see if he could receive financial aid from them.'' Hegelund was arrested while staying at a hotel. He had returned $916 of the money, but had no means of supporting himself because he had never had a job on the Island.
He said that he had been a visitor since February and had been given permission to stay on the Island.
Insp. Duffy said: "He does have a return ticket to enable him to leave the jurisdiction. The Police have made a recommendation for his deportation.
Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl-Ann Mapp said: "These are very serious charges and I need to consider the facts. I will take into consideration what has been recovered and the fact that you have pleaded guilty.
"The gravity of these offences would merit a period of incarceration. Then I would be inclined to agree with the prosecution that you would be deported after sentence.'' The case was adjourned until Monday. Hegelund will remain in custody until then.
