The badly decomposed body, identified as Charles Eugene Smith, was discovered on Parsons Road across from the National Stadium by Agriculture and Fisheries workers.

It appeared that Smith, 51, had been living in a tent in the trees when he died. His body was found lying on a bed in the makeshift shelter, which was well hidden from view.

A pathologist at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital estimated from the amount of decomposition that Smith had been dead for about three months.

Although an autopsy could not determine the exact cause of death, it showed that it was not as a result of violence. There was no evidence of fractures, stab wounds or injuries on Smith's body.

Investigating officer P.c. Kenneth Bourne testified that death may have been due in part to living alone in the bushes with no one to help Smith if he fell ill.

He said there was no proper shelter and the cool temperatures Bermuda was experiencing at the estimated time of death may have been a factor.

Coroner the Wor. John Judge ruled that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Smith's death.
