Jamaicans are charged with importing cocaine, cannabis
Two Jamaican men have been charged in Magistrates' Court on charges of importing substantial amounts of cocaine and cannabis last week.
Seven days after arresting Jeffery Fitzgerald Sharpe and David Lloyd Simster, Police and Customs narcotics officers presented them before Magistrate Carlisle Greaves yesterday.
Both of Hanover Parish, Sharpe, 29, and Simster, 32, are understood to have swallowed the drugs before leaving Jamaica via air for flights to Miami, and on to New York and then to Bermuda on December 13.
In the week since the arrests, Simster is understood to have excreted a total of 332 grammes of cocaine worth $83,000 and another 38 grammes of cannabis, worth $1,900.
Jamaicans face drugs charges While in custody Sharpe has passed 450 grammes of cocaine worth an estimated $112,500.
Simster faces charges of importing cocaine, possessing it with intent to supply, importing cannabis, and possessing it with intent to supply.
Sharpe faces charges of importing cocaine and possessing it with intent to supply.
The men did not have to speak during the short hearing before Mr. Greaves, who, after laying the charges before them said: "All right, in these matters, the Crown intends to pursue them indictably (solely in the Supreme Court).
"So I'm not going to ask for a plea from you,'' he said. "Do you understand?'' When he did not get a response, Mr. Greaves, a Barbadian, said to the Jamaicans: "Do you understand what I just said? Irie?'' "All right then you're remanded in custody at Her Majesty's Prison Westgate, a very nice facility, I must say, until January 2 when you'll reappear in court,'' he added.
