`Jim' Woolridge is the `people's choice'
Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan but despite the confusion, the majority of people interviewed in Hamilton yesterday thought Tourism Minister the Hon.
C.V. (Jim) Woolridge should be the next Premier.
Since Sir John's resignation, Mr. Woolridge and Finance Minister the Hon.
David Saul have emerged as the leading candidates to replace him as Premier.
Mr. Peter Marsh said he would definitely like to see Mr. Woolridge at the helm and as for Dr. Saul: "There is something about when he talks, he bothers me.'' Mrs. Marguerite Bean said Mr. Woolridge has "the know-how, and he has been in politics quite a while. I think he's the man''.
But, Mrs. Daisy Simons said she felt it was a toss-up. "Maybe it should be Jim Woolridge because he has been dealing with Tourism all this time.'' Mr. Omar Harvey said he felt Dr. Saul should be the next Premier.
"Dr. Saul will run the country on a business level and he will continue to maintain our financial stability globally.'' And Mr. Sterling Swan said Dr. Saul was the best choice because he was the most knowledgeable man.
One woman said her choice was Mr. Woolridge because her father-in-law did not like Dr. Saul.
When asked who should be the next Premier, Miss Stacey Medeiros said: "I am really not sure but I think whoever it is needs to keep Bermuda and our welfare in mind.'' Mrs. Cathy McNiven said Mr. Woolridge had a lot more pizzazz than Dr. Saul and "Dr. Saul is too arrogant and he is not a team player''.
Ryan Bronson, 17, said: "To be honest I don't know who any of those guys are.'' Mr. Barry Johnston said Dr. Saul was the man because he was the Finance Minister and "he would be the best person to move the Island to become a better economical and stable financial environment. After all, the money is the bottom line.'' On a lighter note, one man elected autograph collector Lee Edmead and his dog Buttons as the next Premier of Bermuda. Mr. Van Martin was the only one who expressed any sadness about the resignation of Sir John Swan.
"I think it was a shame that we lost Sir John but he put it on the line. He is an honourable man and he paid the price. For the next Premier I would like to see Jim Woolridge because he possesses the character to bring people together.
"Dr. Saul is an excellent businessman and accountant but Bermuda needs someone who can get the trust of the people from all walks of life,'' Mr.
Martin said.
Mrs. Jo Marshall thought Dr. David Dyer should be a possibility for Premier.
"Dr. Saul is an organised person. He is very efficient as Finance Minister and he would do a good job. I was also impressed by Dr. Dyer's comments prior to the Independence Referendum.
"He expressed himself well and he made a lot of sense with his view on being anti-Independence.'' However, Mr. Kenneth Robinson felt Mr. Woolridge could do more for Bermudians both low and middle class if he were Premier.
"He will work better for the community,'' he added.
