Jury finds Burgess guilty of manslaughter
yesterday after a Supreme Court jury deliberated for more than two hours.
Burgess, 31, of Turkey Hill, St. George's, was charged with murder but the jury returned a not guilty verdict to that charge and convicted him of manslaughter, an alternative count, instead.
His sentencing was adjourned until Thursday afternoon so that Crown and defence counsels can prepare their pre-sentence submissions.
Burgess, whose nephew Ronae Callion Burgess, was sent to prison for life on October 15, 1994, for murdering Clarence (Trees) Smith at the Southampton Rangers Club, sat stoically in the dock as the verdict was read out.
He was involved in a fight with Wilfred (Oopie) Ming Jr. at the Canterbury Bar and Grill on September 10, 1994 after they became embroiled in an argument that involved name calling and anti-gay slurs.
Both men began fighting on the steps near the Water Street tavern's downstairs entrance.
During the fight Burgess pulled a knife from a pouch on his waist. Ming received two cuts to the chest and was later pronounced dead at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
He was represented by Mr. Delroy Duncan while Attorney General Mr. Elliot Mottley prosecuted.
