KBB organises `trash attack'

Over two weeks, KBB has picked up some 15 tons of garbage from the western and eastern parishes.

And this Saturday, the final phase of the operation takes place, with the focus on Pembroke, Paget and Devonshire.

"The emphasis is on prevention, since these types of clean-ups would not be necessary in the first place if people were not so careless and insensitive to their environment,'' said KBB administrator Mr. Dwayne Williams.

Anyone wanting to take part in the "trash attack'' should contact Mr.

Williams on 295-5142.

LONGBIRD BRIDGE CLOSED FOR BOATS TRA Longbird Bridge closed for boats Harbour Radio yesterday announced that Longbird Bridge will be closed to all marine traffic until further notice.

The bridge became inoperable on Tuesday around 4 p.m. due to mechanical difficulties.

INDEPENDENCE CAMPAIGN TONIGHT IND Independence campaign tonight The Committee for the Independence of Bermuda will launch its membership drive campaign tonight.

The group -- chaired by Mr. Walton Brown Jr., aims to increase its membership to 1,000 by the end of the year.

The membership drive meeting will be held at the Leopard's Club on Cedar Avenue, starting at 7.30 p.m.

Membership is possible for a minimum donation of $1. Bumper stickers will be available.

Mr. Brown, the committee's treasurer Mr. Perry Mason, and secretary Mr. Darren Easton will also be on hand to answer questions.

AMERICAN MAN HAD CANNABIS CTS American man had cannabis A 25-year-old American bartender was fined $600 in Magistrates' Court this week when he admitted importing six grams of cannabis into Bermuda in his underwear.

Joseph Michael Vita, of New Jersey, admitted possessing the drug when he was stopped at the Airport.

Sgt. Rex Osborne prosecuting said Vita was stopped at the Airport when he arrived five days ago.

Inside his underwear customs officers found a plastic sandwich bag that contained plant material.

The plant material was analysed and found to be cannabis which weighed 6.16 grams.

Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. Edward King fined Vita $600.

STUDENTS DEBATERS ARRIVE IN BERMUDA ED Students debaters arrive in Bermuda Five student debaters from Canada are due to arrive on the Island this week as guests of the Bermuda Debate Society.

The students from St. Andrew's College in Ontario will take part in exhibition debates at local secondary schools.

"This is not the first time the Canadians have debated against Bermudian students,'' the Bermuda Debate Society said in a news release. "Last year, a Bermuda team visited St. Andrew's and participated in workshops and exhibition debates.'' The Canadian students will visit Warwick Secondary School, Warwick Academy, Saltus Grammar School, Berkeley Institute, Bermuda High School, and St.

George's Secondary School. They are accompanied by their coaches Mr. Rupert Ray and Rev. Bob April.

BRITISH AIRWAYS CUTS FARES FLY British Airways cuts fares British Airways are cutting fares for November 1-December 6 flights.

The mid-week fare will be $549, the weekend one $599, said local BA spokeswoman Mrs. Sallie Singleton.

She added there was a minimum stay of seven days, and travel must be completed by December 15.

And tickets had to be booked 14 days in advance, with payment made within 72 hours of reservation.

"Ticketing and payment must be completed by October 31, 1995,'' she stressed.

Local BA manager Mr. Philip Troake said: "We are very pleased with the success we've had this summer.

"Now that we have three flights scheduled to operate throughout the winter this year, we are keen to maintain the momentum.''
