Legal milestone for outstanding student
scholarship recipient, has been called to the Bermuda Bar after completing her Articles at the London law firm of Stephenson Harwood.
The Chief Justice the Hon. Mr. Justice Ward welcomed the Bar's newest addition in the Supreme Court before a number of her family members, friends and a crowd of AS&K colleagues.
Mr. Justice Ward noted the death last year of Miss Stanton's father Keith Stanton, the senior Government statistician, saying he had had the opportunity to work closely with Mr. Stanton while he was Registrar of Companies. He said he may not see Miss Stanton as much since she had chosen to work behind the scenes as a solicitor rather than a barrister.
Mr. John Campbell, senior partner in the law firm of Appleby Spurling and Kempe, officially welcomed Miss Stanton to the Bar on behalf of the legal fraternity.
He said Miss Stanton, who is now working full-time at AS&K, had "proved right'' reports from other lawyers in the firm commending her for her "enthusiasm and thoroughness''.
Miss Elizabeth Jones, the new president of the Bermuda Bar Association, welcomed her on behalf of the Association.
Miss Stanton, 26, is the daughter of Mrs. Marjorie Stanton.
After graduating from Warwick Academy in 1985 with 10 GCE O Levels, Miss Stanton attended Lester B. Pearson College in Vancouver Island, Canada where she obtained her international baccalaureate.
She was awarded a scholarship by the Bermuda National Committee for United World Colleges.
Miss Stanton is currently standing for election as a member of the United World Colleges National Committee.
After graduating from Pearson, Miss Stanton completed a one-year diploma course in French at the University of Nice, France, before going on to study law at the University of Durham in England where she obtained an honours degree.
She passed her solicitors final exams at The College of Law, Lancaster Gate before doing her Articles at Stephenson Harwood.
She specialised in litigation, property and corporate law.
Miss Stanton was called to the Bar in England and Wales last October.
After taking time off from her legal studies to travel to the Far East, Australia and South Africa, Miss Stanton returned home to Bermuda to work for AS&K, specialising in mutual funds and securities law.
