Liquor Licence amendments approved
the House of Assembly on Friday.
The amendments to the Liquor Licence Amendment Act were supported by Government and the Opposition and the bill will now return to the Senate for approval.
Minister of Education Jerome Dill said he was pleased with the outcome, adding that the refined bill was the result of further consultation with the liquor industry.
The Senate amended the bill to allow members clubs to open at all hours instead of the previous 10 a.m. to 3 a.m.
The orginal bill recommended extended opening hours for restaurants and bars and alfresco dining. Proposals to allow restaurants to open until 3 a.m.
angered some night club owners who feared it would affect their trade.
But the Senate amended the bill only to allow freedom for premises to open and close within their allotted licensing times.
Other amendments include making it illegal to have minors on night club premises when liquor is being sold and requiring owners to refuse admission to those who cannot produce identification.
In addition young people who fail to leave when asked or fail to produce ID that is false or has been altered, are committing an offence. A further amendment includes no opening on Good Friday or Christmas Day -- instead of all public holidays -- for certain licence holders but opening within allotted hours for restaurants, night clubs, hotels, tour boats, members clubs and those with proprietary club licences.
