Man admits assaulting his mother
from her home.
Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. John Judge asked for a social inquiry report on Perry Wingood Swan, 38, of Mullet Bay Road.
Swan pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting his mother, Marlene Winfield Swan, at her home on July 24.
Swan was also charged with behaving in a threatening manner and using offensive words.
Sgt. Kenrick James, prosecuting, told the court that Police were called to Swan's parents' home on the evening of July 24.
Swan, who had been out drinking, returned and got into an argument with his mother. He began banging his fist on the table, said Sgt. James, shouting and hitting his mother with his fist.
He was restrained by his aunt and his mother was able to run away. Duty counsel Tim Marshall told the court Swan was ashamed of what he had done and that during his stay in jail since Saturday he had had a chance to think.
"He will be living with a cousin in Southampton,'' Mr. Marshall told the court. "It saddens him that he did this to his mother. I would ask the court to consider that he is also the father of a 12-year-old and that this behaviour is totally out of character for him.'' "What concerns me Mr. Marshall is that I note Mr. Swan had been drinking. Is there a problem with alcohol? This is of principle concern to me,'' said Mr.
Judge.
Swan was released on $250 bail with one surety and told to stay away from alcohol and his mother's home.
"I have no doubt Mr. Swan is a totally reasonable gentleman,'' added Mr Judge, "but there are those whose personality changes when they drink alcohol.'' The case was adjourned until August 18.
