Twenty-five-year-old Calvin Spence, of Whaling Hill, told Magistrates' Court that he went to the church for help after three men cut his finger when they tried to rob him.
"I was either going to die or get help because my finger was bleeding so much,'' he added.
Spence, who is being held at Westgate Correctional Facility for an unrelated offence, was remanded in custody yesterday.
He will be tried on August 12.
