Man gets $5,000 in fines

Raymond Oneal Beach, 25, of Cottage Hill Road, was caught speeding on Green Bay Road in Hamilton Parish on April 15.

The court heard he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and told officers his name was Dewan Ivan Trott, who also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, so he was subsequently arrested.

He told Police his real name at Hamilton Police Station.

Beach admitted making a false statement and trying to pervert the course of justice and was fined $300 for each charge.

He also pleaded guilty to not having insurance, riding an unlicensed bike, and speeding at 59 kilometres per hour and was fined $1,000, $250, and $250 respectively.

He further admitted riding an unlicensed and uninsured bike on September 4 and was fined $250 and $1,000 respectively.

And Beach pleaded guilty to speeding at 72 kilometres per hour on January 2 on St. David's Road and was fined $350 and disqualified from all vehicles for twelve months.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner asked Beach why he had not paid $1,500 in fines which dated back to December, 1997.

Beach said he had been a member of the Salvation Army's Harbour Light addiction programme and thought the fines had been taken care of.

He asked for time to pay and Mr. Warner replied that Beach "don't like to pay at all''. However he gave him until May 26 to pay his new fines.

HOMELESS MAN SENT TO PRISON CTS Homeless man sent to prison A homeless man was sent to jail yesterday for three months for trespassing and was fined $400 for possession of drug equipment.

Keith Edward Peniston, 42, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to the two charges before Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner but denied begging.

Magistrates' Court heard that Peniston disobeyed a written notice from Washington Mall security guard Stanley Douglas which banned him from entering the mall.

Mr. Douglas saw Peniston in the Mall on November 18 and informed Police.

Police saw him two days later and invited him to Hamilton Police Station where he appeared fidgety.

Officers searched him and found he had a crack pipe and arrested him. The pipe was analysed and cocaine residue was found on it.

Peniston pleaded not guilty to a further charge of begging on Front Street on April 10 and will reappear in court on April 25 for trial.

CLUB ARGUMENT TURNED VIOLENT CTS Club argument turned violent A Southampton man was yesterday sentenced to six months in prison for assault.

Terry Reginald Raynor, 39, of Bow Lane, was having an argument with another man at Southampton Rangers Club on January 23, when Clayton Lewis Swan stepped in and told them to take their argument outside.

They did so and were followed by Swan who tried to calm the dispute.

The man who Raynor was arguing with left the scene and Mr. Swan became the target of Raynor's aggression.

Raynor went to a dumpster in the parking area of the club, removed a bottle and struck Mr. Swan on the head. Mr. Swan suffered a wound that required five stitches at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

Police arrested Raynor who made a voluntary statement under caution, in which he said: "I had a couple of drinks and got into an argument with some guy over I don't know what.'' Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner took into account several previous convictions, including one for assault in 1980, before sentencing Raynor to six months in prison.

CONTROLLED BURNING GOT OUT OF HAND FIR Controlled burning got out of hand Firefighters were called to a Somerset residence after a piece of controlled burning got out of hand on Saturday afternoon.

A truck and four firefighters attended Church Valley Lane at 12.40 p.m. after a fire in a 30 foot by 30 foot area of brush took hold. The blaze was brought under control in just less than an hour.

And early yesterday, firefighters extinguished a 20 foot by 40 foot area of brush that was ablaze on North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish.

Meanwhile, a burnt out water pump caused a fire at Bermuda College on Sunday morning. One truck and five firefighters were called to the incident which was caused by an electrical fault.

SHARP TV STOLEN FROM HOME CRM Sharp TV stolen from home A thief took a Sharp colour television from a Warwick Close, Warwick residence whilst the owner was off the Island between April 6 and 16.

And a knapsack and wallet containing cash and bank cards were taken from a luggage compartment on an auxiliary cycle parked on Elliot Street, Hamilton on Sunday.

BLUE HOLE HILL HIT BY BREAK-INS CRM Blue Hole Hill hit by break-ins A string of break-ins in the Blue Hole Hill, Hamilton Parish area has caused Police to urge residents to be on the look out.

The Shell Gas Station and Swizzle Inn were both broken into early yesterday morning.

Officers arrived at the gas station around 3 a.m., in response to an alarm and found signs of forced entry. The office and several other doors had been opened in the building.

The culprit took a bank bag containing the nightly deposit.

At around 5 a.m., yesterday morning, the nearby Swizzle Inn reported an attempted break-in.

It appeared that the culprit had managed to enter the building and attempted to force open a door inside. Nothing was reported stolen from the Swizzle Inn.

Police are investigating both incidents.

A masked raider snatched a handbag from a Paget shop on Friday afternoon.

The man -- wearing a black mask -- walked into Frameworks on South Road, grabbed the bag from a shelf and fled the scene on a motorcycle.

The stolen handbag contained an unspecified amount of cash and credit cards.

Central Division CID are investigating.

CASH STOLEN FROM HOMES CRM Cash stolen from homes Cash was taken from a Hamilton and a Warwick Parish home during two separate break-ins this past Thursday.

The Camp Lane home was reportedly broken into between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

It appeared that the culprit used force to gain entry into the house, made a search of the premises and then left with a quantity of cash.

The Pearman's Hill home was broken into some time in the morning.

It is not known how the culprit entered the house, but once inside a door to one of the rooms was forced open and cash was removed from a drawer.

Police are investigating both matters.
