Man grew cannabis A Pembroke man was fined after he pleaded guilty to cultivating marijuana.

Wayne Oliver Furbert, 35, of Angle Street was arrested on May 25 after plain clothes Police officers, executing a search warrant for a different matter, noticed a blue wine cooler by his residence.

When they investigated, they found two plants and Furbert said: "They are mine.'' He was arrested, the plants were seized and later confirmed to be two grammes of cannabis.

Furbert said he knew what he did was wrong, but said last year he became ill and was taking four types of medication, but the only thing that made him feel better was smoking marijuana.

He also said his family came first and he was trying to do the right thing for them.

The offences also occurred in an increased penalty zone (IPZ) as it was 90 metres away from the Focus drug rehabilitation centre.

Acting Magistrate Justin Williams fined Furbert $300 for cultivating the plants, and an extra $1,000 for the offence occurring within an IPZ.

Furbert was given until the end of October to pay his fines.
