Man in ICU after baseball bat attack
baseball bat attack which at one point was thought to be life-threatening.
The assault outside the Spinning Wheel nightclub in Court Street, Hamilton, was one of five attacks across the Island during a weekend marred by violence.
The 50-year-old Paget man is now in a stable condition in the ICU at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with severe cuts to his left head, a broken cheekbone and a broken nose.
Police say the victim was about to get into his car at 3 a.m. on Saturday when he was confronted by a man driving a white car.
The attacker leapt out of his car and battered him on the head with the baseball bat, and smashed his windscreen before driving off in his own car with another man.
A Police source told The Royal Gazette yesterday: "Initially it was thought it was going to be life-threatening. It was a bad attack.'' In other incidents, a woman had a glass smashed in her face, a man was struck in the face with a bottle, a youth had two teeth knocked out when he tried to stop a fight, and a man was stabbed in the thigh by a stranger who was sitting next to him on a bus.
Police spokesman Coleman Easton said: "Unfortunately we had a lot of violent incidents over the weekend. We don't think this is a trend, but we would like to reassure the public that we are actively investigating these matters.'' A 28-year-old Pembroke woman said another woman smashed a glass in her face shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday following a scuffle in Docksiders nightclub on Front Street.
Police say onlookers broke up a scuffle between the pair over a personal matter, then the attacker glassed the woman. She was taken to KEMH for cuts to her left eye but later discharged.
Detectives are investigating an assault in Northchurch Lane, Hamilton Parish, when a 46-year-old man suffered a cut to his nose after a woman allegedly struck him with a bottle at 6.45 p.m. on Friday. The attacker is known to the man.
A 16-year-old Hamilton Parish youth lost two teeth when another teen punched him as he tried to break up a fight at the bus terminal in Hamilton at 8.45 a.m. on Friday.
In a bizarre attack, a man claims he was stabbed in the thigh by a stranger sitting next to him on a bus.
The man said he was struck by the passenger as he got up to get off the bus at Blue Hole Hill, Hamilton Parish, at 8 p.m. on Friday. He later found bruising on his thigh and was treated at KEMH for small puncture wounds.
