Aaron Millard Carmichael, 30, of Alexandra Road, appeared in Magistrates' Court charged with one count of stealing and five counts of dishonesty.
He is alleged to have stolen five cheques and tried to pass them off as his own.
He pleaded not guilty to all six charges and a trial date was set for December.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner then questioned Carmichael about $800 in unpaid fines for four counts of stealing in 1998.
Carmichael said he had just started a new job and was just recovering from breaking his neck.
He asked Mr. Warner for time to pay, but was refused.
In default, a sentence of 70 days was handed down, and Mr. Warner activated this sentence.
