after pleading guilty to stealing and traffic offences -- and then complaining about his fines.

Bulford Smith, 39, of Lusher Hill, was charged with stealing two shirts from the Sports Source in Warwick and liquor from two different supermarkets.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said Smith entered the Sports Source on August 16 at 12.30 p.m. and was spotted by a salesperson putting two T-shirts into a blue bag he had over his shoulder.

Sgt. Taylor said Smith then walked out the store without paying for the shirts.

A saleslady followed Smith out of the store and confronted him at which point he opened his bag and showed her a price tag for one of the shirts and said: "It cost $22''. He then handed her $22.

The saleslady looked into the bag and saw another shirt and asked Smith about it. He told her he did not have the money, but he would bring it back. The two shirts were worth $43.90 in total.

Smith was picked up by Police five days later and he admitted that he took the shirt because he "liked it''. He was placed on Police bail then released.

But on the same day around 5.40 p.m. Smith was seen by the manager of Lindo's (Warwick) Supermarket in the liquor section placing two bottles of Vodka worth $40.40 in a blue shoulder bag. As he left the store, the manager stopped Smith and told him he saw him take the two items.

Sgt. Taylor said Smith walked back into the store and put the bottles back on the shelf. He was held at the store and told that Police would be called, at which point he replied: "I've never done anything like this before, the Laws of Moses departed from me.'' On August 24 at 7.30 p.m., Smith was seen by security of Heron Bay MarketPlace stealing four bottles of liquor worth $92.72.

Smith was seen by a camera in the liquor section, taking two bottles of vodka and two bottles of Bacardi Rum.

The manager along with security stood in front of the store and waited for Smith who walked past a closed register and walked out the store.

He was stopped and confronted about the theft and again replied: "This is the second time I've done something like this. Again I've forgot the laws of Moses.'' When Smith appeared in court yesterday to face the charges, Sgt. Taylor also noted that he had warrants for traffic offences dating back to May and June.

On May 28 and on June 21 Smith was caught driving his unlicensed and uninsured car with no driver's licence.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis ordered Smith to pay a total of $400 for the three stealing charges, $100 for the two shirts, $100 for the vodka stolen from Lindo's and $200 for the liquor stolen from Heron Bay MarketPlace.

The traffic offences cost him another $1,700 in fines, $1,000 for the two uninsured offences, $400 for the driving an unlicensed car offences, and $300 for each of the no driver's licence offences.

Upon hearing the amount of the fines, Smith began shouting insults at Sgt.

Taylor.

He was quickly escorted out of the court by the bailiff.
