Man sent to Supreme Court for sentence
stole more than $14,000 to the Supreme Court.
Kingsley Burgess, 43, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to stealing a Canadian couple's two carry-on bags which contained $14,330 worth of goods on September 28.
Burgess also admitted receiving a stolen television set and a video cassette recorder on August 24.
Police prosecutor Sgt. John Dale said on September 28 a Canadian couple awoke to find their carry-on bags gone after they had left them near the door of their room at the Royal Palms the night before.
Among the goods inside the bags were an electronic diary, a camera, and an assortment of jewellery, including a $4,000 emerald necklace.
Sgt. Dale said Police were able to link Burgess to the scene via forensic evidence. And upon being arrested Burgess admitted the offence, saying he took the bags through a window and sold the jewellery to support his drug habit.
The second charge against Burgess, Sgt. Dale explained, originated from a break-in on Langton Hill in Pembroke on August 24, where $3,425 worth of goods including a stereo, television set, and a VCR were stolen.
Police found the television set and VCR in the bushes behind the house, left them there and waited for someone to retrieve them, Sgt. Dale said.
Burgess was arrested when he attempted to retrieve the items.
He told Police: "These guys set me up, they paid me $50 to get this stuff''.
Duty counsel Miss Kim Wilson said Burgess was addicted to heroin. But she said he realised the negative impact his addiction has had on his life and that he needed help.
Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. Edward King told Burgess: "You are killing yourself with your addiction and killing the goose that laid the golden egg, tourism.'' Mr. King sentenced Burgess to nine months in prison for receiving the stolen television set and VCR. He committed him to the Supreme Court for the other charge.
