Man told to get haircut, cut out his bad language
told him to get a haircut.
And he ordered Troy Harris to return to court next week with proof that he is working.
Harris, 29, of Crisson Avenue, pleaded guilty in April to swearing on Court Street shortly before 11 p.m. on March 6.
On April 27 Mr. Hodgson heard a Police foot patrol was outside the Swinging Doors Nightclub when Harris shouted "F**k off''.
He was warned and as Police were about to leave he shouted: "You guys wouldn't f**king well be able to do this if I could get 50 other people to stand with me. You guys wouldn't be able to do f**ks.'' Harris was arrested and cautioned but said: "I ain't done f**ks.'' Yesterday Mr. Hodgson told Harris that the community would not tolerate his using offensive words.
He explained to Harris -- who is unemployed -- he had only completed 15 of 200 hours of community service from another conviction and he would activate a 3-month suspended prison sentence.
Harris repeatedly told Mr. Hodgson "prison won't work'', but did not suggest an alternative sentence to jail.
Mr. Hodgson then ordered Harris to return to court on June 16 with proof that he had worked for pay or had shown probation officer Jermaine Postlewhite he had done some community service work.
Mr. Hodgson also told Harris that although dress conventions had changed, if he wanted help he would have to change his appearance.
"We tolerate the way you are dressed and your hair, but you are not showing me you want my support,'' he said.
He asked Harris to remove his jewellry, earrings, and skull cap, and told him he should have his hair cut by next Tuesday.
"If you want my help, I want you to come with your hair cut, and not wearing your clothes hanging outside your pants,'' Mr. Hodgson added. "Look around you at how that reporter, Mr. Postlewhite, or (Crown counsel) Mr. Mussenden are dressed.'' Mr. Mussenden added: "Maybe he can explain that if a person is not working how can he show up in court wearing $100 sneakers, your worship.''
