Marsh fire rears head for second day
after nearly 40 firefighters tackled a major fire at the same spot.
Fire Service crews rushed to Devonshire Marsh after Government employees working at the marsh raised the alarm.
More than 30 firefighters responded to the 911 call, which came in around 10.40 a.m.
Bermuda Fire Service's Lt. Jon Thompson said the fire appeared to have been caused by a smouldering area -- a hot spot -- which rekindled itself.
Fire crews were hampered by strong north east winds which fanned the flames in the opposite direction from Thursday's blaze.
Lt. Thompson said the fire was out by 2.40 p.m. -- more than three hours after the first firefighters arrived on the scene.
But he said crews remained on site uncovering and damping down other hot spots. A Fire Services spokesman later reported the fires out by early evening.
A blaze, thought to have been started by a homeless person burning rubbish on a path bordering the marsh, burnt out an area measuring 300 feet by 500 feet on Thursday.
But Government experts said it was unlikely any permanent damage had been done to the marsh and may even benefit it in the long run.
