Mixed blessing for nursery
from neighbours.
But despite the protests, planners have agreed the Somerset after-school care centre can take more children.
Ms June Robinson was given permission to run a nursery in her home, Hamble Cottage in Long Bay Lane, in January. She was only allowed to take 20 children between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on school days.
She asked the Development Applications Board if she could open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and take 10 more children, and board members agreed.
But they said she would not be allowed to open during school holidays, despite hearing parents had "complained bitterly'' that the nursery couldn't open during the Easter break.
They heard neighbours Mr. Christopher (Kit) Astwood and Mr. Raymond Pitman objected to more children at the nursery.
Mr. Pitman said holiday opening would mean more noise and more "invasion of privacy'' for elderly residents and cause them "undue distress''.
Child minder Mrs. Pattijean Roberts, of Woodlawn Road, was given permission to open a nursery at Somerset Seventh-Day Adventist church. DAB members said there could be a maximum of 40 pre-school and 30 after-school children. The nursery will be able to open between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays.
