MP Woolridge fined $180 for speeding at 56 kph
after being found guilty of speeding at 54 kph.
Although the Progressive Labour Party MP put up a strenuous defence as to why he should be found not guilty of the charge acting Magistrate the Wor. John Cooper sided with the evidence given by the officer who operated the radar gun.
P.c. Ferdinand Thorne told the court that on January 30 at 4.45 p.m. he was operating the radar while situated along South Road in Warwick opposite Astwood Cove.
"I saw a red motorcar travelling west and estimated that it was traveling between 50 and 55 kph. I pointed the radar gun at the car and 54 kph showed on the display,'' P.c. Thorne said.
"I held the gun towards the car for 30 seconds then locked it on. There were no other vehicles effecting the beam at the time. This was visually confirmed and it was confirmed by the built-in device in the radar.
"I then sent the information to my chase rider P.c. Andrew Rawlins who stopped the vehicle driven by Mr. Woolridge and issued him a ticket.'' However, Mr. Woolridge said there was at least one car behind him and one small blue truck in front of him. He added that there was no way he was speeding.
"I believe that P.c. Thorne was mistaken, it was not me who was speeding,'' Mr. Woolridge said.
P.c. Rawlins also said that before he pulled Mr. Woolridge over he saw other motorists passing.
But in his judgment, Mr. Cooper said there was conflict between the evidence of the officers and the defendant about the presence or absence of the number of vehicles following or in front of the defendant.
However, "I believe the evidence given by P.c. Thorne was accurate'', he said.
