MPs give Bermuda's top athletes the thumbs up

Youth and Sport Minister the Hon. Pamela Gordon added the names of the other award winners: Mr. Stevie Dickinson, Mr. Malcolm Smith, Mr. Kavin Smith, Ms Jennifer Fisher, Mr. Chris Flook, Mr. Hazzard Dill, Mr. Austin Hughes, Mr.

Perry Johnson, Ms Thelma (Jones) Mauzy, Esso Bermuda, Mr. Malcolm Gosling, Mrs. Prudence Brewer, and Mr. Dennis Lewin of the US Naval Air Station.

Ms Gordon also commended ZBM for its live television coverage of the awards gala.

Mr. Harry Soares MP noted that Mr. Wellman was the first person to win back to back Athlete of the Year awards and served as "a very good role model for young people.'' Finally, Ms Gordon congratulated the organisers of the recent Drug Awareness Day -- "a great example of what Bermuda can do.'' Shadow Youth and Sport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown sent support to Bermuda's lone entry at the Winter Olympics in Norway -- luge competitor Mr. Simon Payne.

Dr. Brown also congratulated those who vied for and won contracts to provide concessions at Horseshoe Bay and Ocean View Golf Course.

Transport Minister the Hon. Maxwell Burgess asked that condolences be sent to the family of Mrs. Aliene Uredice Joyce (Holly) Wright, who died last week. He noted Mrs. Wright was active with the ladies' auxiliary at the hospital, her church, and the Eastern Lioness Club.

Among those who asked to be associated with the Minister's remarks was Works and Engineering Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons, who noted that Mrs.

Wright's husband Alfred was superintendent of the Government Administration Building.

Mr. David Dodwell MP expressed condolences over the death of Mr. Leonard Alfred (MP) DeSilva, a well-known member of a large Southampton family who died recently.

He noted Mr. DeSilva's nickname "had nothing to do with this honourable House.'' Mr. Lowe voiced his sadness over the death of Mrs. Priscilla Ingham of Eastdale Lane, Southampton.

Mr. Dennis Lister MP sent condolences to the family of Mrs. Bliss Mary Evangeline Trott, a longstanding member of the Somerset community who died last week.

Mr. Lister noted that he shared a birthday with Mrs. Trott and she would always bring him a piece of her birthday cake to his store.

Health and Social Services Minister the Hon. Quinton Edness expressed condolences over the recent deaths of Mrs. Sedal Imogene Fleming, Mr. Willard Ellsworth Chesterfield Manders, and Mrs. Helen Dorothy Wilson.

Mr. Dodwell also congratulated the National Trust on the opening of the archeological exhibit at the Tucker House Museum in St. George's. He noted the exhibit was made possible through "the generous gift of Mrs. Collins Outerbridge.'' Community and Culture Minister the Hon. Wayne Furbert congratulated Rev.

Stanley Lee on his 15 years as pastor of Evangel Tabernacle God's Deliverance Centre.
