The Government tabled the Clean Air Amendment Act 1999 in the House of Assembly, which will tighten up restrictions on certain businesses in regard to atmospheric emissions.

Included in the amendment are requirements for vehicle spray painting facilities, dry cleaners and premises using non-portable engines to be included in the Act.

It will mean that such businesses have to apply for licences to operate and come under the rules of the Clean Air Act.

Some residents had complained about emissions from spray garages and some may have to install extractor fans and other devices to reduce any pollution.

The Ministry of Environment responds to any complaints about discharges and orders any improvements to comply with the Act.
