`Neglected beauty' in US spotlight
according to two newspaper articles published in the heartland of the Island's US market.
Both the mass selling New York Post , a tabloid, and the Philadelphia Inquirer recently published articles on Bermuda -- and both highlight the Island's positive sides.
The articles are just two of hundreds that appear in trade magazines and newspaper articles around the world.
According to Department of Tourism figures, in 1996 alone Bermuda was featured almost 950 times in some form of US media.
There were 599 articles in North American newspapers, 172 magazine articles, 53 radio slots and 121 features on television.
The Inquirer feature has three different headlines: "Bermuda: Neglected Little Beauty''; "All Bermuda Lacks is Crowds of Admirers'' and "Why Does This Island Beauty Get the Cold Shoulder in Winter?'' Murry Frymer, the author, says recently there has been "much soul searching'' due to falling tourist numbers and he reports on the major hotels' losses, a so-called "bad attitude'' and crime, which he says is falling.
He praises the Island's cleanliness, its beauty, the restaurants and the prices and about the only criticism was the narrow roads which made walking difficult.
Mr. Frymer writes: "Bermuda remains a bucolic, georgeous place. If you want something that takes your breath away, come here.'' The Post article focuses on Bermuda in the winter and says "the Island has lots to offer during the winter -- and some of it is even free''.
Listed are hotel discounts, the temperature guarantee scheme, free events and dining.
Both articles also tell the reader how to get to Bermuda and list contact numbers for more information.
