Fire broke out in the engine room of the 1,266-passenger Statendam , delaying her delivery more than three weeks and causing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Although all launch festivities for the ship have been re-timed, she is still expected to make her first visit to Bermuda on schedule on April 19.

Statendam is operated by Holland America, and her local agents are Harnett and Richardson.

Fire broke out during final outfitting at Monfalcone in Italy but was confined to the engine room. Electrical wiring is believed to have been the source of the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Holland America president Mr. Kirk Lanterman said the shipyard was expected to cover repairs and added the line was covered by insurance for any losses due to delays.

Statendam has been praised as a return to the elegance of old-fashioned European liner design. She is the first in a trio of new Holland America ships.

Pre-launch announcements highlighted new features on board including bridge equipment that could pinpoint fires immediately.
