New loading system should take trucks off Front Street
past after a new docks system officially came on line yesterday.
A new container loading system has just been introduced at Hamilton Docks which will increase the capacity of the area and speed up loading and off-loading of containers.
All container traffic will enter and leave the docks through Number 8 Gate, after being loaded by new equipment bought by Stevedoring Services earlier this year. Previously lorries had queued on Front Street.
In addition it is expected a new computer system will eventually remove the need for paperwork when clearing goods on the docks, speeding up the process.
A new entrance ramp to Number 8 Dock was officially opened yesterday by Mayor of Hamilton the Rt. Wor. William Boyle.
He said: "We are delighted to be finally able to remove the container truck queue off Front Street.
"This has been an eyesore in Hamilton for many years and something the Corporation of Hamilton was determined to do something about.'' In 1992, Mr. Joseph Barbera produced his Hamilton Docks Inquiry Report which made several recommendations to the Corporation. Changes were implemented by the Corporation Wharf Committee, chaired by Alderman William Frith.
The new system actually went into operation last Monday and has operated smoothly, according to Mr. Ewart Lambert, Corporation of Hamilton Docks Manager.
"Despite a late start on Monday, due to the late arrival of the Oleander , we were still able to deliver 65 containers.
"The system is designed to improve both efficiency and productivity and it also has the added benefit of improving safety.'' Corporation of Hamilton, Customs and Docks representatives.
