The new crossing has replaced the old one that was closer to the crest of Spurling Hill.

Corporation secretary Mr. Roger Sherratt said they decided to move the crossing forward because drivers coming onto Reid Street had a limited visibility of people crossing and they wanted to make it safer.

"With a loading zone right in that same area there are often container trucks along the side of the road which also created a problem with motorists seeing pedestrians,'' Mr. Sherratt said.

"We put the crossing at the foot of King Street at the junction with Reid Street which will enable pedestrians to get across.'' Mr. Sherratt added that the Corporation had placed large warning signs next to the new crossing to make the public aware of the change.

"The new crossing will provide for better safety because motorists can see better.''
