New Police paper will be `upbeat'
Press-ing task...producing their own newspaper.
The Police hope making the news -- and reporting it themselves -- will give a write boost to morale.
And the new Commissioner Mr. Colin Coxall has already fired off his first instructions to the editors-in-waiting -- the paper must be "positive, upbeat, intelligent, and not at all stodgy and turgid''.
"We will certainly try to make it as fluid as possible,'' said Inspector Coghlin Gibbons yesterday.
Insp. Gibbons and P.c. Gary Venning, both from the Community and Media Relations Department, hope to launch the venture at the end of the month.
The paper, expected to contain four or eight pages, is the brainchild of Mr.
Coxall as part of a bid to build up good morale within the service.
"It will be circulated internally for free, and be published every two months,'' said Insp. Gibbons.
He added the focus would be on Police-related matters, such as commendations, promotions, retirements, marriages and births.
It was also proposed to carry features, opinion pieces, and plenty of sports articles.
One of the ideas is to include colour on the front page, Insp. Gibbons continued.
"No decision has yet been made on whether we will carry advertisements or not, and we still don't know about costs.
