New site for Stadium to be debated
set for debate in the House of Assembly on Friday.
The debate comes one week after Government tabled a bill which would turn land at Prospect over to the National Sports Centre trustees and pave the way for extensive development plans to proceed.
Shadow Youth and Sport Minister Mr. Nelson Bascome said yesterday the Opposition would proceed on Friday with a motion calling for a review of the proposed site for the sports centre, "in light of the options opened up by the return of the former Base lands.'' Mr. Bascome said he would propose alternative sites for the sports centre. He was not opposed to completion of the stadium at Prospect known as the National Stadium, but felt it should not be expanded.
He would propose a plan which would also help build tourism and create jobs.
Mr. Bascome said his recommendations were consistent with the 1994 report of the Premier's Commission on Competitiveness, and with previous reports produced for the Ministry of Youth and Sport.
"It just amazes me that Government hasn't come up with it yet,'' he said. In the House last Friday, Government tabled the National Sports Centre Trustees Amendment Act 1995, which would turn stadium lands along Frog Lane in Devonshire over to the National Sports Centre trustees, allowing them to borrow money against the land.
Mr. Donald Lines, who chairs the board of trustees, has said the act needs to be passed before the next phase of the sport centre's development may proceed.
