NLP backs handicapped group over building

Association in its bid to keep its headquarters in the Old Military Hospital at Prospect, Devonshire.

The Ministry of Works & Engineering, which says it needs the building as a works depot while building the new senior secondary school, has given the BPHA notice that it must leave the building by November 30.

But the BPHA has questioned taking a specially-equipped building for the handicapped and turning it over to the able-bodied.

In a statement, NLP spokesman Mr. Charles Jeffers urged Government to reconsider.

"The association does much in helping physically handicapped people to be useful citizens in the community and less dependent on Government. The NLP concedes that the building in question would be very convenient as a works depot while building the new school at Prospect. We are not convinced that there are no other viable options.'' Mr. Jeffers said Works Minister the Hon. Leonard Gibbons appeared "very comfortable with the fact that his Ministry has given the BPHA two and a half months to relocate.'' However, "he seems unaware of or unconcerned about the special needs of the association, both in physical plant and financially''.
