will impact the Atlantic Basin this summer.

This comes as the first tropical depression of the season twists itself into a possible tropical storm in the Gulf Of Mexico.

The depression is currently 1,740 nautical miles west-southwest of Bermuda and is not expected to impact the Island.

Researcher William Gray and his colleagues at Colorado State University in Fort Collins have increased their earlier prediction for named storms from 11 to 12, for hurricanes from seven to eight and for major hurricanes from three to four.

The updated prediction is a result of the La Nina weather phenomenon, a cooling weather pattern over Pacific Ocean waters near the equator.

HOME SCHOOL WARNING ED Home school warning Truancy officers have met parents who educate their children at home and their teachers to ensure they have the proper permission.

Education Minister Milton Scott said the Education Department knew of some children who were being kept away from school without authorisation.

Any parent who wants to educate their child out of the Government and private education systems must have authorisation from the Department of Education.

A Government attendance officer advised home teachers and some parents about the rules at a meeting recently.

Senator Scott said: "We know there are children out there who don't have the official sanction to be within the home schooling set up so it is important they go through the proper process, which is not time consuming.'' NEW ROLE FOR PHILLIPS ED New role for Phillips A former Tourism Director will be promoting Bermuda's image abroad in a different capacity.

Gary Phillips has been appointed to serve as the Bermuda Society's coordinator in Bermuda.

Mr. Phillips said the Bermuda Society was incorporated in England in 1987 by people interested in promoting the Island's image in the UK.

And he noted that the main function of the society was to develop closer links between Bermuda and England in the areas of finance, commerce and economics.

"My role specifically is to promulgate the name of the Bermuda Society in Bermuda and demonstrate the advantages of being members,'' he said.

"For example, if a Bermuda business might want to establish commercial links with a business in the UK -- and I might be able to help with that.

Mr. Phillips was appointed as the result of a committee meeting in March -- but despite questions from local acquaintances, he laughingly assured The Royal Gazette that he had no plans to relocate to England.
