Burland, 39, who came fifth in the Tornado catamaran class in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, admitted the offence when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Mr. Michael Scott, representing Burland, who lives at East Shore Road, Sandys, said the May 30 incident was an oversight, caused by Burland's boating partner not reading documents properly. Longtime fisherman Mr. Lester Moulder was heading out to sea on his boat Sweet Thing on Saturday morning when he struck a shoal. The hit made a hole in the side of his boat.
"It was dead low tide,'' he said. "And although my depth finder was showing 12 feet we did strike a (reef) head.'' Mr. Moulder praised Harbour Radio for promptly sending a boat to his rescue.
Marine Police got to Mr. Moulder and his crew of five before the boat's engine was submerged.
"Their pump really helped,'' he said. "It got a lot of water out and we were able to motor in. It was a close call.'' Keith Devon Gumbs got into a taxi at about 1 a.m. with 5 other young men. The taxi driver noted that they had all been drinking, said Police prosecutor Insp. Peter Duffy.
The passengers asked to go to a variety of addresses on the western half of Bermuda. The last address was in Somerset Road near Willowbank.
When they arrived, the taxi driver said that fare was $30.50. Gumbs and his friend, Dennis DaCosta -- who was tried separately and fined $50 -- said they only had about $12.
The taxi driver offered to let them leave something as a surety of payment, or call someone to get the money, but the two declined, said Insp. Duffy.
Gumbs and DaCosta were then taken to Somerset Police Station.
Acting Magistrate the Wor. John Judge fined Gumbs $50.
TEENAGER STOLE HAIR PRODUCTS CTS Teenager stole hair products A 17-year-old was caught stealing hair products at Hamilton's Phoenix Centre, Magistrates' Court heard yesterday.
Katrina Rubaine, of the Brangman Home, Smith's Parish, was spotted by a security guard on August 15, putting the items in her bag, the court heard.
She left the store without paying for them and was stopped by the guard.
She admitted stealing a bottle of shampoo, a bottle of conditioner, and two tubes of hair gel, together worth $13.90, and was fined $25.
MAN FINED $450 FOR CANNABIS CTS Man fined $450 for cannabis An early morning Police raid on a Warwick man's home netted 2.25 grams of cannabis, Magistrates' Court heard yesterday.
Insp. Peter Duffy told the court that when officers discovered the drug at Michael Rogers' apartment on January 17, he freely admitted smoking it.
Rogers, 32, of Marley Beach Close, admitted having cannabis and cigarette papers and was fined $450.
CANNABIS CARRIES A HEAVY PRICE CTS Cannabis carries a heavy price Ernest Johnson, 31, was found in a Court Street parking lot with cannabis on him, Magistrates' Court heard yesterday.
The court was told Police saw Johnson crouching behind a van near the Spinning Wheel at 2.15 a.m. on December 12, 1990. A search revealed he had 0.82 grams of cannabis, worth $50.
Johnson, of St. Mary's Road, Warwick, admitted having the drug. He was fined $150.
