Pair await judgment in theft trial

Two men accused of stealing a bag and video equipment from an undercover Police officer during an illegal male strip show last May are now waiting for judgment.

Dean Ming, 37, and Troy Rawlins, 35, both of Pembroke, deny charges of stealing the items and unlawfully assaulting P.c. Rosabelle Lambert on May 9.

During the second day of testimony this week, Magistrates' Court heard Ming's version of the sequence of events leading up to their arrest.

He said event organiser Terry Burgess told him to seal off the entrance to the Spinning Wheel nightclub and search P.c. Lambert's bag.

P.c. Lambert refused to be searched and was taken downstairs. She was asked repeatedly if she had a camera in her bag but refused to be searched.

Ming said he and a female security guard pleaded with her to allow them to see if she had a camera but a crowd started to form so he turned his attention to holding it back.

He told the court that someone in the crowd shouted that she was a cop but she refused to confirm this.

When Police officers arrived they went straight to P.c. Lambert and spoke with her. When she pointed at him, Ming continued, they backed him against a wall and told him that he was under arrest.

Ming admitted trying to take hold of P.c. Lambert's bag but denied struggling for it.

He said: "I was instructed by Terry Burgess to take the bag, but I never touched the lady. I touched the strap.'' He denied tugging the bag and causing the injuries to P.c. Lambert.

When asked what stopped him from holding onto the bag he said: "Somebody yucked the bag and it was gone.'' Head of security and ticket collector Judith Burgess told the court the same version of events.

Judgment will be handed down on May 5 by Magistrate Edward King.
