The National Liberal Party has put forward a motion in the House of Assembly to amend the Parish Council Act of 1971.
NLP leader Mr. Gilbert Darrell said the change would make the Act more democratic by having registered voters in each parish elect who they want to sit on their parish councils.
That was the case before 1971, he pointed out. But as the Act stands now parish council members are appointed annually.
Mr. Darrell is proposing to delete Section Three of the Act and substitute a new section containing provisions for: The election of 12 members for each parish council by the registered voters in the parish.
A three-year tenure of office for all members so elected, all of whom shall be eligible for re-election.
The election of a chairperson and deputy chairperson for each parish council by its members at the first meeting following a parish election. The motion is slated for debate in the House this Friday.
