Pembroke West

returning incumbents Dr. David Dyer and Dr. Clarence Terceira to the seats the United Bermuda Party has held since the inception of party politics in 1968.

Despite torrential rain throughout most of the day, 1392 voters turned out to cast 1791 votes for the UBP and 865 for the PLP.

Dr. Dyer and Dr. Terceira swept to victory with 917 and 874 votes respectively, easily beating their PLP rivals Mr. Carvel Van Putten and rookie candidate Mr. Michael Cox, who polled 468 and 454 votes respectively.

Again, Dr. Dyer topped the popularity poll with a 43-vote lead over his nearest rival and running mate, Dr. Terceira.

Making good his promise to run again in this UBP stronghold, Mr. Van Putten garnered 71 more votes than his first run in 1989, while newcomer Mr. Cox made a respectable showing, trailing just 14 votes behind his more experienced partner.

Philosophical in defeat, Mr. Cox vowed to run again. "Mr. Van Putten and I are the candidates for this area, and people in Pembroke West will be seeing us between now and the next election. A lot of people didn't see us this time, and they didn't know what we stood for or how we felt. But I really enjoyed the campaign, and I feel good about the result.'' His PLP running mate blamed his defeat on a "forced'' election, and the present system of electoral boundaries.

"There was a lot of psychological movement to it. We lost our students. I don't think anybody was quite ready for an election. It was a forced issue. In a truly democratic society like Bermuda we have to even out the ballot boundaries. Right now, certain individuals get in anyway. It is one of the things we are going to go for.'' Dr. Dyer also had some regrets -- though none about his success. "It was a completely different type of election this time because there was a major attempt to try and make race an issue. That we have not had for quite a long time. I think we must bear in mind that there are some racial legacies from the past. These things need to be addressed and dealt with in the not-too-distant future.

"On behalf of Tessie and myself, I thank the voters of Pembroke West from the bottom of my heart for choosing us as their representatives in the next Parliament,'' Dr. Dyer said.
