Applications Board okayed plans for a playground, basketball court, and football pitch on land adjacent to the Southampton Rangers Sports Club.

The plot of Government land, which is 1.6 acres, belongs to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Parks, and will serve as a facility for young people.

Last month several residents in the area agreed that there was need for a place where young people could play as there was nothing for them to do in the community.

But some of them were concerned with the fact that the liquor-selling sports club was nearby and in the past was the site of fights.

However the Southampton East Playground Committee says the play area would be fenced in.
