PLP leader responds to criticism

editorials "condemning'' the Progressive Labour Party's position on voter registration and the running of Bermuda's prisons.

Calling this newspaper "Bermuda's fourth political party'' during the House of Assembly's motion to adjourn, Mr. Wade said: "Instead of taking a broadside against the Government for a policy (annual voters registration) that wastes funds and time of thousands who make an effort to register, the editorial -- on May 14 -- condemns us for complaining about the annual registration system.'' He said the PLP, which is "the only political party active in the field in registering voters,'' simply wants a system which will include Government-paid people canvassing those who do not register.

"We were promised that,'' he said, adding that Government instead sends a letter to homes.

"Certainly this annual procedure is a waste of public effort and public money.

Noting the section of a May 20 editorial which states: "Mr. Frederick Wade, says, in effect, that if Government tries to clean up the prison service, Bermudians should `take a stand' because it will be un-Bermudian,'' Mr. Wade said "before they used to misquote then kick you on the misquote. Now they put words in your mouth.'' Clarifying his position about the prison situation, Mr. Wade said: "I said I heard the Minister and Government were planning to bring in an Englishman for the position (of Prison Commissioner) and nothing is being done to put in place Bermudians who are qualified for the position.

"Bermudians ought to stand up and complain and fuss about any move to bring someone in to run our prisons,'' he said.

Mr. Wade stressed that Prison Commissioner Mr. Milton Pringle is "only a tool for the Minister and he cannot be held responsible for Government action.''
