PLP opposes Gov't purchase of land
edge of Port Royal golf course, saying the $50,000 purchase had not been explained.
Government had thought it owned the quarter-acre strip on the eastern edge of the course, Sen. the Hon. Maxwell Burgess said. But it didn't, so it was buying it from owner Mr. Henry William King.
Sen. Ira Phillip (PLP) said the land was of no particular use to Government.
"The $50,000 is almost like a gift to Mr. King.'' Opposition Senate leader Sen. Alex Scott said there were a lot of unanswered questions about the deal. `It's not just an innocent tract of land, I fear.'' Sen. Wendell Hollis (UBP) said there had been a misunderstanding over the boundaries at the time the property was bought in 1968. It was part of the Constitution to compensate citizens reasonably for loss of property.
Sen. Burgess, who introduced the proposal to Senate, condemned members who cast aspersions about the deal when there was no need to. The purchase was approved on an 8-3 vote.
