PLP to pick leader today
leader.
The 17-strong Parliamentary PLP will join up with the General Conference of the party to select the late Frederick Wade's successor.
Acting PLP leader Jennifer Smith said last night, speaking only hours after Mr. Wade's funeral, that she would only begin thinking about the leadership vote today.
She added: "I will be turning my attention to that, but I have let members know I will be standing.'' No-one else has yet shown their hand in the race for the leadership and it was suggested earlier this week that Ms Smith -- in the interests of party unity and out of respect for Mr. Wade -- would be elected uncontested.
But Ms Smith refused at the time to rule out the possibility of competition for the leadership, saying: "I guess I'll find out on Tuesday.'' PLP insiders believe that any serious challenge for the leadership will come at the party conference in November, when all posts are up for grabs in the biennial elections.
Names which have been mentioned as possible contenders are Home Affairs spokesman Alex Scott and Human Affairs spokesman Dr. Ewart Brown.
Outsiders who may join the race include Finance spokesman Eugene Cox and -- less likely -- former Deputy Leader Walter Roberts.
Mr. Wade's vacant seat -- where an election must be held within 60 days of Mr.
Wade's death -- could provide a further challenge in November from Senate member Terry Lister if he was to be chosen as prospective Parliamentary candidate for the rock-solid PLP Devonshire North area.
