Police chiefs to get drug report

Police social club party is expected to be presented to senior officers this week.

Police Commissioner Jean-Jacques Lemay called for the internal inquiry after The Royal Gazette reported claims from two independent witnesses who said club guests smoked drugs at a party in November. Both witnesses said senior off-duty officers who were present failed to take any action against the drug users, even though they knew that drugs were being used.

The civilian manager of the club, which is situated at Police headquarters at Prospect, has since been suspended from his job.

Yesterday a Police spokeswoman said that, although the investigation was due to be completed three weeks ago, Christmas celebrations meant that it had been delayed.

Commissioner Lemay is also off the Island at the moment but is expected to return next week.

COMPUTER BUG SOLVED TRA Computer bug solved The computer crash that disabled hundreds of taxi meters on New Year's Eve has now been fixed, according to the Island's authorised meter dealer.

Yesterday Dennis Eve confirmed that the computer bug had been rectified, although he refused to explain how the problem had been resolved.

In a brief statement to The Royal Gazette Mr. Eve said: "The problem has now been sorted out.

"At the end of the Millennium all the meters would be going out and last week's problem was part of that. But I have got some new equipment. I don't want to go into details but I hope that it's now all sorted out.'' Mr. Eve had earlier denied that there had been any problems with taxi meters over the holiday period.

But it was later revealed that as many as 70 drivers' meters broke down at midnight on New Year's Eve.
