Police in parking ticket blitz
sites out of safety concerns.
Last week there was a blitz of Gorham Road north of the ACE and XL Capital building site which an area business owner has criticised.
But after a sweep of northern Cobbs Hill Road yesterday morning, the top cop in the Western Division will be personally contacting more than a dozen motorists who were legally parked.
While what will be discussed is not known, it is understood the northern section of the road was deemed by an officer to have been obstructed and a cause for concern for passage, especially for emergency vehicles.
New development at the old Palm Reef Hotel site on Harbour Road, which is perpendicular to Cobbs Hill Road, complicates navigation.
The convenience of parking near the ferry stop at Darrell's Wharf attracts many of the motorists.
A Police spokesman said last night: "We have reviewed the situation and the officer in charge of the western division is going to be making contact with people who were ticketed to address the issue further on a one-on-one basis.'' The Pembroke business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, said a Police car arrived at the Gorham Road area one morning last week and two traffic wardens and a Police officer got out and started ticketing cycles parked there.
"And this has been going on for a while'' said the complainant. "You would have thought they had more important things to do.'' The area in question is at the east end of Gorham Road at the junction with Bermudiana Road.
Due to the construction of the new ACE and XL buildings, there is dirt and debris on the road and it is not clear where parking is allowed and where it is prohibited. The complainant said Works and Engineering was contacted but were unwilling to repair the area until construction finished.
Also contacted was the Corporation of Hamilton who told the complainant that Hamilton City limits ended at Bermudiana Road, so this was not in their jurisdiction.
The complainant remarked; "No one wants to deal with it.'' `You wil be contacted': These cars on Cobbs Hill Road appear to be parked legally, but have been deemed to be obstructing traffic.
