Police Inspector pleads not guilty
appearing in Magistrates' court next month for a traffic offence.
Insp. James was involved in a road traffic accident on Montpelier Road on September 23, 1996.
He appeared before Senior Magistrate Will Francis earlier this year and he pleaded not guilty to one count of driving without due care and attention.
His trial was set down for May 27 at 9.30 a.m. He is represented by lawyer Michael Telemaque.
A report in Saturday's Royal Gazette concerning the court appearance of Police cycle squad officer P.c. Brian Robinson reporting he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without due care was incorrect.
In fact, P.c. Robinson did not enter a plea, he merely acknowledged the facts of the charge as entered by the Crown, and was bound over for two years.
"It's a method used to give an individual who has strong mitigating circumstances a second chance,'' said his lawyer Tim Marshall. "The whole idea is to avoid a conviction and criminal record.'' The statement that P.c. Robinson had pleaded guilty was given to The Royal Gazette by a spokesman for the Attorney General's chambers and a Police spokesman.
